There are two sides to the diagnosis of serious disease ; its discovery on the one hand, and its exclusion on the other. Aortic aneurysm, for example, is of such gravity that it ought never to be overlooked ; yet it is of some importance that a diagnosis of aneurysm should never be made except when it is actually present, for this diagnosis is tantamount to the dismissal of the patient from active life.
